National Geographic Traveler calls city a "Jewel in the Region"
Columbus, Indiana can boast of another honor for its architectural excellence and stewardship of its historical assets. In the November/December 2008 edition of National Geographic Traveler, the city of 40,000 residents is ranked 11th out of 109 historic destinations worldwide by National Geographic Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations.
Columbus scored 78 points in the magazine's 5th annual survey of destination stewardship, placing it 11th on the list, higher than any other U.S. destination. About Columbus, the magazine states, "Although it is surprising to see a Midwestern burg in the company of Dijon and Stockholm, this 'jewel in the region' boasts 'world-class mid-century modern architecture.'"
A panel of 280 well-traveled experts in a variety of fields evaluated the places using six criteria, weighted according to importance: environmental and ecological quality; social and cultural integrity; condition of buildings and archaeological sites; aesthetic appeal; quality of tourism management; and outlook for the future.
